Race to the Equator: The Neptune Regatta Returns to the Riau Islands

One of Southeast Asia’s most enticing island adventures — the Neptune Regatta — is a raid-style ‘race’ that threads through the emerald waters of Indonesia’s Riau Archipelago. Traditionally held over the Lunar New Year holidays, this unique event is more of a rite of passage. With its dramatic equator crossing, remote anchorages, and camaraderie-rich fleet, the Neptune has earned its reputation as “the world’s only race to the equator.”

Launched in 2011, the regatta now operates under the stewardship of Nongsa Point Marina, just 11 nautical miles from Singapore. The course begins and ends at this gateway to Indonesia, winding through island channels, fishing villages, and jungle-fringed bays. Sailors navigate a mix of passage legs and tactical anchor-to-anchor sprints, embracing the spirit of a raid-style race — where seamanship, and spontaneity matter as much as speed. In the early years of the event, the fleet left Nongsa Point Marina and raced overnight to reach “Neptune Island” – a real gem that lies some 7 miles from The Line. That was racing in its purest form! The intervening years saw overnight stops on some of the islands along the way. This made the event accessible to boats with lesser experience it. For 2026, Graham Lind is ‘putting the band back together’ and it will be interesting to see what the final format will be. Graham was one of the leading lights for the inception of the original event and that might just be the spark needed to fire up the cauldron again.

The southward course leads participants through some very interesting patches of sea where the Java and South China Sea collides creating all manner of navigational anomalies from standing waves to whirlpools the size of Davey Jones’s locker!

But one of the regatta’s most iconic moments is the Equator Crossing Ceremony, where “Pollywogs” (first-time crossers) are transformed into “Shellbacks” in a lively, salt-soaked tradition that blends naval lore with tropical revelry and some obnoxious tonic! It’s a celebration of both personal achievement and shared adventure — a reminder that sailing isn’t just about competition, but connection.

The Neptune Regatta offers a rare blend of challenge and charm in equal measures. It’s a chance to explore Indonesia’s hidden coastlines, test your skills, and join a fleet chasing the horizon.
